“When I started coming to Oconee Therapeutic Riding, my anxiety was bad and I felt uneasy riding horses after suffering several bad falls. But, after getting to know Heidi Maloy Campbell and her program, all of that changed. She is one of the most genuinely kind people I know, who makes me laugh and feel safe. She and Rhea Scruggs are like family to me and always cheer me up. Not only the people, but the horses are amazing. All of the horses are so well behaved and can handle almost any situation. Because of their calm demeanor I feel comfortable riding them and it provides an outlet for me whenever I feel low. Both a distraction and a safe space, Oconee Therapeutic Riding has helped reduce my anxiety and I have healed my relationship with horses since coming here. Now I volunteer to help others enjoy the same benefits the farm brought to me!”

Additional Volunteer Info

To volunteer at Oconee Therapeutic Riding, you must attend a volunteer training session which are held several times throughout the year. These sessions typically last 1 to 2 hours, and you will learn how to participate in lessons, how to complete barn chores, and learn the general expectations of our volunteer team. Once you have completed your training, it’s time to volunteer! A timesheet will be sent to your email on a weekly basis, so sign up for the time that works best for you. Arrive at your assigned time and sign in on the clipboard in the tack room, which can be found to the left of the barn. Then check the whiteboard on the outside wall of the barn to the left to see what tasks need to be completed. Please do not hesitate to ask any interns or farm workers if you have any questions; they are there to help!
